Best Website Monitoring Tools in 2026, Compared

Nine website monitoring tools ranked by how many of nine common website problems their cheapest paid plan checks, then by price. Every rival price links to the vendor page it came from.

Visual Sentinel publishes this guide and sells one of the tools. On the criterion below it ranks number 2.

The short answer

Oh Dear ranks first: its cheapest plan checks 7 of the 9 problems, including broken links and scheduled jobs. Visual Sentinel is second with 6, and is the only uptime tool in this list whose plans compare scheduled screenshots with a saved version, which catches a page that loads but looks broken. UptimeRobot, Site24x7 and Better Stack check 5 each; choose between them by price, check speed and on-call needs.

Method

How we ranked the tools

We counted how many of these 9 checks each tool's cheapest paid plan includes (for free software, the software itself), using the vendor's own pricing and product pages on October 16, 2026. More checks rank higher. A tie goes to the lower monthly price when both prices are in the same currency. This measures coverage, not how quickly or accurately a tool spots a problem.

  1. Site downThe site stops answering visitors.
  2. Security certificateThe padlock certificate breaks or is about to expire.
  3. Domain expiryThe domain name registration is about to run out.
  4. DNS recordsThe records that point your domain at your site or mail change or fail.
  5. Page speedA full page-load or Lighthouse test, not only how fast the server replies.
  6. Looks brokenA scheduled screenshot is compared with a saved version, so a page that loads but looks wrong is caught.
  7. Wording changedThe text on a page is compared with an earlier version. A check for one fixed word does not count.
  8. Broken linksThe site is crawled for links to missing pages.
  9. Scheduled jobsA backup or import job that stops checking in raises an alert.

We left out server resources and application health checks, because both need software on your own server or in your code, which most business sites on managed hosting do not have. Visual Sentinel and HetrixTools include a server agent, and Oh Dear reads application health results; the tool notes below say so.

Incidents we caught

Two real incidents from sites we run, caught by Visual Sentinel. Text, logos and faces are removed.

A homepage lost its layout for about four hours

July 2026. A homepage lost its layout for about four hours: the full-width banner shrank and the page text stacked down the left side. All 1,250 uptime checks that day passed. Text and logos removed.

Normal
Homepage with a full-width red banner filling the screen under a one-line menu. Text and logos removed.
Broken
The same homepage with its banner shrunk to a small box and its text stacked down the left in plain type, as if its stylesheet had not loaded. The broken area is outlined.

A header lost its layout for 35 minutes

September 2026. A homepage header lost its layout for 35 minutes: the menu stacked and the booking buttons stretched across the page. No downtime was recorded in that window. Text, logos and faces removed.

Normal
Homepage with a one-line menu, a logo on the left and two booking buttons on the right, above a photo banner. Text, logos and faces removed.
Broken
The same homepage with the menu stacked in the middle, oversized social icons and the two booking buttons stretched across the full width. The broken header is outlined.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best website monitoring tool?

It depends on what can go wrong with your site. On our stated criterion (how many of 9 common website checks the cheapest paid plan includes, then price), Oh Dear ranks first with 7 and Visual Sentinel second with 6. UptimeRobot is a strong low-cost choice for many simple checks, Better Stack suits teams that need on-call schedules, and Pingdom suits teams that script checkout journeys. Visual Sentinel publishes this guide and sells one of the tools.

How did you rank these tools?

We listed 9 common ways a business website goes wrong: the site going down, the security certificate, domain expiry, DNS records, page speed, a page that loads but looks broken, changed wording, broken links and scheduled jobs that stop. For each tool we counted how many its cheapest paid plan includes, using the vendor's own pricing and product pages on October 16, 2026. More checks rank higher. A tie goes to the lower monthly price when both are in the same currency. It is a coverage ranking, not a test of how quickly or accurately each tool detects problems.

Which website monitoring tools have a free plan?

When we checked on October 16, 2026: UptimeRobot Free covers 50 monitors every 5 minutes. HetrixTools Free covers 15 uptime and 15 server monitors. Better Stack is free for personal projects with 10 monitors and heartbeats. Site24x7 has a free plan with no time limit. Visualping Free covers 5 pages and 150 checks a month. Uptime Kuma is free software you host yourself. Oh Dear and Pingdom offer free trials instead. Visual Sentinel has no free plan for new workspaces: your site's first check is free, then a 7-day trial (card required) or a subscription.

How much does website monitoring cost?

Entry paid plans we checked on October 16, 2026 start at $9.95 a month (HetrixTools Professional), $10 (Site24x7 Web Uptime), $13 (UptimeRobot Solo, US price), $14 (Visualping Personal 1K), €15 before VAT (Oh Dear Solo), $16.50 billed annually (Pingdom Synthetic) and $34 per license (Better Stack Responder). Visual Sentinel plans are $15, $30, $80 and $300 a month, 15% less billed annually. Compare what each price covers, not only the number.

Which tools catch a page that loads but looks broken?

A check that only asks whether the site answers stays green when a layout breaks, an image disappears or a button is hidden. Visual Sentinel compares scheduled screenshots with a saved version on every paid plan (1 site on Solo, 5 on Starter). Visualping detects visual changes on pages you choose. UptimeRobot offers a separate free change-detection tool that emails a snapshot of a chosen page area. The other tools here did not list scheduled screenshot comparison.

What does Visual Sentinel not do?

It does not crawl your site for broken links, watch scheduled jobs, read application health results, send SMS or voice alerts, script multi-step journeys such as a checkout, or measure speed for real visitors. Oh Dear, Better Stack, UptimeRobot, Site24x7 and Pingdom cover some of those, as the comparison table shows.

Is this ranking independent?

No. Visual Sentinel publishes this page and sells one of the tools, so read it as a sourced comparison, not neutral research. Every rival price links to the vendor page it came from, with the date we checked it. Prices change and some vary by region, so confirm the live price before you buy.
