What Is DNS Monitoring?
DNS monitoring records selected public DNS values over time so your team can review when an address, mail route, alias, nameserver, or verification record changes. Visual Sentinel takes a scheduled snapshot every six hours for enabled paid monitors, alongside the uptime, SSL and visual checks on the same website monitor. The first snapshot becomes the baseline; when a later snapshot differs, the system stores the new values and sends the notification channels configured for that plan. Scheduled DNS history can track A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, and NS records. You can choose the record types that matter for a monitor. SOA is available in the on-demand DNS tools, but it is deliberately excluded from scheduled change alerts because routine serial changes would create noise.
How often are DNS history snapshots taken?
The DNS history worker refreshes enabled paid monitors every six hours. The first snapshot becomes the baseline. A later scheduled snapshot that differs from the previous one creates a change record and sends the configured notification.
Can DNS monitoring prevent domain hijacking?
No. A monitoring service cannot prevent a registrar, nameserver, or account change. Visual Sentinel records selected public DNS values and can alert after a scheduled snapshot differs. Your team still needs registrar locks, multi-factor authentication, restricted DNS access, and a response process.
