About Cloudflare
Cloudflare is a core internet backbone provider, running a CDN, DDoS protection, DNS resolution, Workers (edge compute), R2 (S3-compatible object storage), Pages (JAMstack hosting), Zero Trust (SSE/SASE), and the 1.1.1.1 public resolver. Because so much of the web proxies through Cloudflare, an outage can feel like the whole internet is down. Incidents are scoped per data center (Cloudflare has hundreds of POPs globally) or per product. Why can Cloudflare fail to reach my website during an outage?
A failed connection means Cloudflare cannot reach your origin server. During Cloudflare-side outages, this can happen even when your origin is healthy because edge-to-origin routes are affected. During origin outages, your server itself is down. Check your origin directly (bypass Cloudflare) to distinguish.
Does a Cloudflare outage break sites that only use Cloudflare DNS?
Yes. If the authoritative DNS for a domain is hosted on Cloudflare and the DNS service is affected, resolvers cannot look up the domain. Visitors see NXDOMAIN or timeouts even though the origin server is fine. Backup DNS or secondary authoritative providers mitigate this.
