shopify theme and app monitoring
Know when a theme or app update breaks your Shopify layout.
Shopify keeps the platform up; it does not watch your theme. An app embed, a theme update or a leftover script can wreck product cards, the header or the mobile view while the store still loads normally. Visual Sentinel screenshots your storefront pages on a schedule, compares them with the last good version, and alerts you with the difference.
7-day trial, card required, or subscribe now. Solo is $15/month ($12.75/month billed annually). 14-day money-back guarantee on every paid plan.

What is Shopify layout monitoring?
Shopify layout monitoring checks how your storefront looks, not whether Shopify is up. Visual Sentinel loads your public pages (home, collection, product) in a real browser on a fixed schedule, takes a screenshot of the visible screen or, if you choose, the whole page, and compares it pixel by pixel with the confirmed baseline. When a theme update or an app embed moves the difference past your threshold (5% by default), you get an alert with the before, after and difference images. The same monitor also checks uptime, the SSL certificate on your custom domain, DNS records and response speed, and on Starter and higher it can watch the visible text in parts of the page you choose, such as a price or an "Add to cart" label.
what you get
Built for issues customers actually notice.
Catch the broken product grid, not just downtime
Shopify's platform status says nothing about your theme. A screenshot comparison shows when product cards collapse, images vanish or the header overlaps after a change.
Phone layout checked separately
A theme section can break at phone width and look fine on a laptop. Business and Agency capture desktop and phone separately, so a phone-only break still raises an alert. Solo and Starter watch one screen size per site, desktop or phone.
Custom-domain SSL and DNS watched too
An expired certificate or a changed DNS record on your own domain can break the store for visitors while the admin still works. Every paid plan checks SSL expiry and keeps selected DNS record history beside the screenshot.
Text watch for price and stock labels
On Starter and higher, point the monitor at the price, the stock badge or the shipping notice (with a CSS selector), and Visual Sentinel alerts when that text changes. It reads the page as the server sends it, so labels that only appear after scripts run are not checked.
Alerts to the channels you use
Email, Slack, Discord, Microsoft Teams, Telegram, WhatsApp, PagerDuty, OpsGenie, webhooks, Prometheus and web push on every paid plan.
Nothing to install in your theme
Checks run from Visual Sentinel's EU and US regions against your public pages. No app, no theme snippet, no extra script that could itself slow the storefront.

how it works
Three steps, no extensions.
Add your key storefront pages
Home, one collection and one product page are a good start. Confirm the first baseline screenshot. Solo covers one visual site plus up to three extra pages; Starter covers five visual sites.
Set the sensitivity
Storefronts with carousels or rotating promos need a higher threshold, or those parts hidden from the comparison; a tightly designed landing page can use a lower one. The default is 5% of the page changed.
Publish the theme or install the app, then read the difference
The next scheduled capture is compared with the baseline. If it crosses the threshold you get the before, after and difference images; fix the theme, turn off the app embed, or accept the new look as the baseline.
Frequently asked questions
Can Visual Sentinel monitor the Shopify checkout?
No. A Shopify checkout needs items in a cart and a live shopping session, and Visual Sentinel does not click through multi-step journeys such as adding to cart. It monitors the public storefront pages: home, collections, products, landing pages and policy pages. Use a scripted testing tool if you need checkout coverage.
Will sliders, promo bars and currency switchers cause false alerts?
They can change pixels between captures. Each monitor has an adjustable threshold (5% of the page by default): raise it for busy pages and lower it for stable ones. You can also hide the parts of a page that change on their own. A visual difference is evidence to review before you change anything.
How quickly will I know a theme update broke the layout?
Visual checks run every 30 minutes on Solo and every 15 minutes on Starter, Business and Agency. When a check finds the page has changed, Visual Sentinel takes a new screenshot and compares it with the baseline, and you get an alert if the difference crosses your threshold. Treat these as check schedules, not a promised alert time: confirming a change and delivering the alert take time too. Uptime and SSL checks run separately every 5 minutes on Solo and Starter and every minute on Business and Agency.
Does it work with Shopify Plus, Online Store 2.0 themes and headless storefronts?
Yes for any public page that loads in a browser, including headless storefronts on your own domain. Pages behind a login can be captured only when a simple login form, session cookies or basic authentication gets the browser in, so test a protected page during the trial before relying on it.
Does it slow down my store?
No code runs inside your theme. Visual Sentinel requests your public pages from its own EU and US regions on the plan schedule, the same way a visitor would.
What does it cost and how do I try it?
Solo is $15/month for 10 uptime monitors and one visual site; Starter is $30/month for 15 monitors and 5 visual sites with text watch; Business is $80/month for 60 monitors with 1-minute uptime checks and separate desktop and phone captures. Annual billing is 15% less. Add your store to see its first check, then start a 7-day trial with a card on file or subscribe now. Every paid plan has a 14-day money-back guarantee from the first payment.
